The three Directors each lead their own areas of specialism in Architecture, Building Control and Planning & Conservation; and work in combination as projects cross the boundaries of their expertise. We specialise in both cutting edge contemporary design as well as heritage projects working on a diverse range of houses from Listed Buildings to New Eco Homes.

Alan formed Settle & Green in 2010, the Practice provides Residential Architecture and Professional Consultancy services to home owners. In 2012 S & G received RIBA Chartered Practice status recognising the high standards to which the practice works. Alan read Architecture at the Architectural Association in London winning several bursaries and scholarships during his time there. At what is generally regarded as the finest international School of Architecture in the world having produced a host of RIBA Gold medal winners including: Sir Denys Lasdun, Sir Richard Rogers and Rem Koolhaas.

Alan’s experience mixes contemporary and traditional architecture, high end contemporary new homes, work to listed buildings and building in conservation areas. Alan has developed considerable knowledge in sustainable construction and technologies through continuing professional development, notably he has achieved Advanced CPD status in sustainable building services, and is Green Register accredited.

Alan has been widely published both as a design expert and for projects he has worked on in: Grand Designs magazine, Build It magazine, Live In Style magazine, RIBA Sector Annual Reviews, and FX magazine. Competitions: Alan was a leading part of the design team winning Grand Designs Home of the Year 2012, finalists for the RIBA Maggie Center Competition in 2007 and has been part of the design team on a number of awarded projects – FX international Interior Design Awards Finalist, Design and Decoration Awards Commercial Interior Design Awarded Finalist, BIAT Open Award for technical excellence Commended and IDSA Gold Industrial excellence award.

Sue has over 40 years experience in Planning and Conservation work at both strategic and local levels. She has worked with members of the public, specialists and owners of listed buildings and other historic properties all her working life. Considered an authority on local heritage she has produced expert local history papers and given talks, including for London Open House and the Essex Historic Buildings Group.

Sue has been a Chartered Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute for over 30 years; she also holds a Diploma in Building Conservation from the Architectural Association in London; as an early member of the Association of Conservation Officers she also became a full member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation following its formation. For many years Sue was elected a member of the Executive Committee of the Standing Conference on London Archaeology representing local government Building Conservation.

She has a wealth of expertise working closely with English Heritage and its predecessor Authorities, and drawing on other specialist Bodies including the National Amenity Societies, the Museum of London, grant making Bodies including Heritage Lottery, Essex Wildlife Trust and others as well as liaising with the other technical building professions. For over 30 years she was responsible for 140 listed buildings, some 300 locally listed and curtilage listed buildings as well as 11 conservation areas all within some 20 square miles of historic landscapes and archaeology. Operating at a strategic level Sue drafted the definitive Heritage Strategy for Havering along with writing and directing other local heritage and conservation strategies and was instrumental in achieving a Green Apple Sustainability Award.

Her motivation has always been to achieve the benefits of the continued sustainability of the historic environment by working closely with owners and all relevant parties exploring opportunities and achieving all-round success. Sue continues to use her knowledge and expertise to inform local and specialist residential projects for clients within the ethos of Settle & Green as a specialist, cross-disciplinary design-led Architectural Practice.

Ian Smith FCABE, MRICS, MCMI

Ian holds over 40 years experience within the Building Control environment including major state-of-the-art projects, as well as in a broader senior managerial role.
Ian is a Member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, a Fellow of the Association of Building Engineers and a Member of the Chartered Management Institute. He has worked with peer groups such as the London District Surveyors Association, international clients, Council Members and Government Ministries and been invited to speak at seminars including at the British Research Establishment. Ian has been widely published in Surveying magazines and journals including the RICS, LABC and ABE.

Having worked within six diverse local authority areas his expertise crosses the full spectrum of projects both large and small, rural and inner city. He is a specialist at delivering compliance that requires thinking outside the box and negotiating between other statutory services such as the Fire Authority. He attained the position of Head of Building Control at L.B.Newham and latterly the Head of the specialist team delivering both the Westfield Shopping City and the Athletes Village at Stratford. His negotiating skills between Council Members and officers, Government Offices, members of the Olympic Delivery Authority and London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games & Paralympics as examples, are invaluable.

By working as an integral part of the design team Ian believes solutions can be found and implemented at an early stage reducing exposure to risk and cost over-runs. He believes passionately in an holistic approach with cross discipline working to provide a level of service previously unattainable. These skills developed and honed within a local government framework that resulted in new ways to assist clients and deliver projects, are a fundamental part of Settle & Green’s approach providing a unique service and expertise to our clients
